‘Digital has a future – but no past!’

Super 8, the small format film, was released in 1965 and almost completely replaced by videos in the 1980s. Rudolf Egli is the only person in Switzerland who still develops Super 8 films.

“Digital has a future – but no past!” is the message on a poster in Egli’s shop in Bern. The trained photographer and avid collector of equipment and gadgets swears by the quality and durability of analogue films. He shares his enthusiasm with his wife and business partner, Romy. Both are retired, but still work three days a week – once a week developing Super 8 films.

The format – which many people think is extinct – is actually enjoying growing popularity among art school students. Every year, he lovingly and skilfully feeds some 1,000 Super 8 films through his old machines. (Images: Christoph Balsiger, swissinfo.ch)
