Geneva Commuters Grapple With One-Day Bus and Tram Strike

Nov. 19 (Bloomberg) — Public transport across Geneva was disrupted this morning as bus and tram drivers went on strike in Switzerland’s second-largest city and private banking center.

There was no service on at least 31 tram and bus routes and disruptions on another seven, Geneva Public Transport said in a morning bulletin on its website. The remaining 20 lines should have normal service, according to TPG, as it’s known by its French acronym.

Geneva transport workers earlier this month voted to hold a one-day walkout to protest the firing of 100 workers. Today’s strike is the first by the city’s transport workers since 1982, according to Le Temps. SEV, the union representing the workers, said the strike was also intended to call attention to retirees benefits and to fight an increase in labor outsourcing.
