Funding approved to finish motorway network

The cabinet has announced that in the period 2012-2015 it is to invest just over SFr3 billion ($3.3 billion) to complete the national motorway network.

Almost 95 per cent of the planned network is already in use; about 100 kilometres still remain to be added.

Most of the construction will be in the cantons of Bern, Valais and Jura. A few stretches of motorway in central Switzerland also have to be completed.

The government approves the long-term road building programme every four years, and the annual programme is authorised by the transport ministry.

The cantons involved finance part of the construction themselves, but most of the costs are borne by the central government.

When complete, the network will have a total length of 1892.5 kilometres. The plans were drawn up in 1960.
