Turbulent times in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych’s decision last November to withdraw from an association deal with the EU resulted in street protests that eventually led to him fleeing to Russia.

Pro-Russian forces have since taken over the southern Crimea region of Ukraine. The crisis has taken East-West relations lurching back towards the Cold War with the United States and the EU replying with sanctions on Russia.

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), currently chaired by Swiss President Didier Burkhalter, has attempted to de-escalate tensions.
