How I survived the Arolla disaster

An Italian skier has described how he survived a brutal ice storm that led to the deaths of seven people in his group while touring in the Swiss Alps.

Tommaso Piccioli was one of 14 people who were on their way to the Vignettes mountain hut above Arolla in canton Valais on Sunday, when they were caught off-guard by bad weather.

The architect from Milan, who now lives in Sydney, told the Corriere Della Sera newspaper that he kept moving all night, sometimes leaning against a stone, in order to keep his heart pumping and stave off hypothermia. (SRF/swissinfo.ch)
