A major catering firm operates out of the basement of Zurich's main train station, serving up 18 tons of pasta, half a million sausages, 700,000 sandwiches and more than 100,000 slices of cake and pastries every year.

Thomas Kern was born in Switzerland in 1965. Trained as a photographer in Zürich, he started working as a photojournalist in 1989. He was a founder of the Swiss photographers agency Lookat Photos in 1990. Thomas Kern has won twice a World Press Award and has been awarded several Swiss national scholarships. His work has been widely exhibited and it is represented in various collections.
The Bahnhof Buffet has been run by the same family since 1923. The original first, second and third class restaurants have since morphed into a major catering firm that operates largely out of Zurich station’s basement. In the 1950s, the Buffet was one of the biggest and most successful gastronomy companies in Europe.
