After taking his Bachelor's degree at the Lugano Conservatory, the Ticinese cellist Mattia Zappa continued his studies in Harvey Shapiro's soloist class at the Juilliard School in New York. He received his soloist diploma in 1998 from the Academy of Music of Basel, where he studied under Thomas Demenga. He played as a soloist with the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana, the Symphony Orchestra of Basel, the Festival Strings of Lucerne, the Geneva Chamber Orchestra and the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
From 2005 to 2009 the pianist Massimiliano Mainolfi toured South Africa three times with cellist Mattia Zappa. CD Claves. Edvard Grieg: Sonata for Cello and Piano, op. 36.
