New coach for Fed Cup team

Switzerland have appointed Hungarian-born trainer Zoltan Kuharszky as the new head coach of the country’s Fed Cup tennis team.

Despite being a joint-Swiss national who represented Switzerland during his playing days, Kuharszky cannot yet be named as the Swiss Fed Cup captain, because of a previous stint in charge of Hungary’s Davis Cup team.

Competition rules dictate that Kuharszky cannot serve as Switzerland’s captain until September, three years after leaving his position with the Hungarian association.

Instead, junior coach and former Fed Cup player Annemarie Rüegg will sit in the captain’s seat for Switzerland’s first round tie away to Slovakia next month.

Kuharszky’s situation is similar to that of Switzerland’s new Davis Cup coach Peter Carter. An Australian citizen based in Switzerland for almost ten years, Carter will only be formally recognised by the International Tennis Federation when his permanent residency papers come through in 2003.
