Switzerland’s federal technology institutes ETH Zurich and EPFL rank in the top 20 universities worldwide with the ETHZ coming in top in mainland Europe, according to the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings.

Overall, the Swiss technology institutes’ rankings (12th for ETH Zurich and 17th for EPFL) put the country in the top position in continental Europe and pose “direct competition for universities in the United States and Britain”, as QS said on Monday.

For the third year in a row, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) took first place in the rankings, followed by a tie between the University of Cambridge and Imperial College London.

Other Swiss universities improved their standings over previous years, with the University of Zurich coming in 57th, the University of Geneva at 85th and the University of Basel at 116th.

The ETHZ is located in Zurich and EPFL in Lausanne.

This is the tenth edition of the QS World University Rankings, which rank the top 800 universities worldwide on an annual basis.
