A new star has been found nine billion light-years from Earth, with help from scientists at the University of Geneva and Lausanne’s Federal Institute of Technology. “MACS J1149+2223 Lensed Star 1”, or Icarus for short, is 100 times more distant than the furthest stars studied so far.

Venezuela protested against a series of “grotesque” and “illegal” sanctions imposed by Switzerland, including a ban on seven senior Venezuelan officials from entering or passing through the country.

Following a decade of annual population growth of above 1%, the rate dropped to levels seen at the beginning of the millennium. A total of 8,482,200 people lived in Switzerland at the end of 2017. Women outnumbered men by 72,676.
