From Solferino to the Red Cross
2009 has been an extremely important year for the Red Cross. From June 23-28 thousands of people from all over the world gathered in northern Italy to mark the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Solferino, which led to the creation of the Red Cross.
On May 5 the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement also celebrated its 90th anniversary and on August 12, events took place to highlight the 60th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions.
