Federer to play in Davis Cup

Top-ranked Roger Federer has decided to play for Switzerland in the Davis Cup, two days after his loss to Juan Martin del Potro in the US Open final.

"I never had any doubt about coming," said Federer, wearing the red jacket of the Swiss team after arriving in Genoa, Italy on Wednesday. "The doubts were created by others. It certainly wasn't me."

The Swiss team had left Federer the option to decide on his plans until after the US Open.

Winning the Davis Cup is one of the few achievements missing from Federer's long list of accomplishments. He missed the first round of this year's competition in March with a back injury, and the Swiss team lost to the United States 4-1.

In Thursday's draw, Federer was picked to play Simone Bolelli (ATP 64) in Friday's singles. Stanislas Wawrinka (ATP 22) will open the best-of-five series for Switzerland against Andreas Seppi (ATP 59).

In Saturday's doubles, Federer and Wawrinka will team against Fabio Fognini (ATP 86) and Potito Starace (ATP 90). The reverse singles are set for Sunday on the red clay courts at the Valletta Cambiaso club.

The winners will play in next year's World Group.
