Suicide attempts in one city

Kai Reusser / swissinfo.ch

This study of canton Basel city is based on 984 documented suicide attempts involving patients presenting at hospitals and clinics in Basel over a four-year period. Women attempted suicide nearly twice as often as men.

The highest suicide attempt rates were found for women aged 20 to 24, for men aged 30 to 34, and for people who were unmarried, of foreign nationality, low education or low employment status. ‘Soft methods’, such as self-poisoning with drugs, were used significantly more often than ‘hard methods’.

The study by the Basel research centre is part of a WHO/EURO Multicentre Study on Suicidal Behaviour.
