Swiss chairs Europe’s museum network

David Vuillaume, the first Swiss to be at the helm of Europe's museum association NEMO

David Vuillaume has become the first Swiss to lead the Network of European Museum Organisation (NEMO) – a body of more than 30,000 museums in 32 countries.

The 41-year-old trained art historian, who has acted as secretary general of the Association of Swiss Museums, was elected at the annual NEMO conference in Bologna, Italy, at the weekend.

Vuillaume pledged to increase exchange programmes and good practices among the museums which have vastly different levels of professionalism according to a NEMO statement on Monday.

Vuillaume has been a member of the NEMO board since 2012. He also coordinated the first nationwide International Museum Day in Switzerland in 2006.

The association was founded in 1992 as an independent network of national museum organisations representing the museum community of the member states of the Council of Europe.

NEMO aims to ensure museums are an integral part of European society by promoting their work and value to policy-makers and by providing museums with information and opportunities for networking and cooperation.
