Swiss politicians offer sympathy to Poland

Switzerland’s top politicians have offered their condolences in the wake of a plane crash that killed Poland’s president and scores of top officials.

“On behalf of the Federal Council and the entire Swiss population, President Leuthard expresses their deep condolences to the Polish people, the parliament and authorities,” the economics ministry said in a statement.

Leuthard holds the economics portfolio in the seven-member cabinet.

Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey said: “I regret most deeply the loss of the Polish people. I met Mr. Kaczynski in 2007 as president. My thoughts are also with the families and relatives of those who lost their lives… I want to express to the Polish people the friendship and solidarity of Switzerland in this tragic hour.”

Calmy-Rey expressed her personal condolences in a letter to her Polish counterpart, Radoslaw Sikorski, the foreign ministry said.
