Noah and Mia top baby names in 2013

82,731 Swiss babies were named in 2013 Keystone

The most popular names chosen for the 82,731 babies born in Switzerland in 2013 varied between the language regions, with Noah the most common overall.

In German-speaking regions of the country, Noah was given to 307 boys and Mia to 313 girls, whereas Gabriel (142) and Emma (125) topped the list in French-speaking regions. Gabriel (35) and Sofia (33) were chosen most often by Italian speakers.

Because the Romansh-speaking population is so small, however, the choice of a “top” name isn’t statistically significant. There were three boys named Jonas, the most popular, but ten names shared second place. Mara was the second most popular girls’ name, but 12 names tied for third place.

In French-speaking Switzerland, Emma has topped the list of girls’ names since 2004.

The Federal Statistical Office recorded names for 40,136 girls and 42,595 boys in 2013.
