Switzerland claims another Hopman Cup title
The tennis year has got off to a good start for Switzerland, with the first victory at the Hopman Cup tournament since 2001.
The tournament, staged in Perth, Australia, is considered the unofficial mixed doubles world championships, which pairs a woman and a man in a doubles team.
Roger Federer and partner Belinda Bencic claimed the title on Saturday with a 4-3 (3), 4-2 victory over a German team. Federer also won the singles final against Germany’s Alexander Zverev, while Bencic lost her singles match to Angelique Kerber.
Roger Federer was last part of the Swiss Hopman Cup team in 2001. The least-experienced player 17 years ago, Federer paired up with then-world No. 1 women’s player Martina Hingis. Today, the roles are reversed: Federer is second in the world rankings while 20-year-old Belinda Bencic occupies 74th position.

In addition to 2018 and 2001, Switzerland also claimed the Hopman Cup title in 1992.
