Aarau last qualifier for round of 16 in Swiss Cup

Nicola Gianotti of Ascona reaches the ball ahead of Aarau's Patrick de Napoli Keystone

Aarau are the last team to qualify for the round of 16 of the Swiss football Cup, after defeating minnows Ascona two-nil in Ticino.

The fourth division side made Aarau sweat to earn its victory. The team from canton Aargau took 21 minutes to find its way past the Ascona keeper, thanks to a strike from Gygax.

Aarau failed to build on its advantage after this first goal though. Much to the delight of the 600 spectators, Ascona held off the visitors’ assaults on their goal for virtually the remainder of the match.

It wasn’t until the last minute that Aarau made sure an upset wasn’t in the offing. Okpala, who had come on in the 71st minute, was able to push the ball over the Ascona goal line.

The draw for the next round of the Cup competition is as follows:

Colombier – Basel
Delémont- Servette Geneva
FC Schaffhausen – Zurich
Lucerne – Aarau
Bellinzona – Young Boys Bern
Yverdon – Grasshoppers Zurich
Wil – Lugano

Servette could be kicked out of the Cup. The team is accused of having fielded a player, Obradovic, who was suspended, during its previous match against Wangen bei Olten.
