Lawyer to sue Swiss banks over Apartheid era role

Ed Fagan has also represented Holocaust-era victims Keystone Archive

An American lawyer intends to file lawsuits against European banks active in South Africa during the Apartheid era, targeting UBS and Credit Suisse in particular.

Ed Fagan, who is acting on behalf of victims of the Apartheid regime, previously represented the Swiss night-guard, Christoph Meili, who saved Holocaust-era archives from being shredded at UBS.

Fagan says he hopes to make claims to the tune of tens of billions of dollars on behalf of organisations and individuals who suffered during the Apartheid regime, as well as torture victims.

The New York-based lawyer says he has been working on the lawsuit for the past nine months and is very close to filing the claim, which he said would be lodged at a court in New York.

A non-governmental South African association “Jubilee South Africa” also plans to file claims against Swiss banks on behalf of victims of the Apartheid era.
