One-time boomtown sees a turnaround
The once-booming town of Rochester, New York has dealt with closings or major cutbacks at many key industrial centres, including the Kodak Eastman headquarters, which now employs barely 6,000 people compared with the 60,000 it once did.
As Americans head to the polls on November 6, the economy is foremost on most voters’ minds and both candidates have pushed their plans to bring the country back to prosperity.
Despite losing many big industrial work providers, Rochester represents the type of turnaround the country is hoping for, having added jobs in the last 20 years by expanding into innovation-based sectors.
These portraits from a renewed Rochester are part of the project “Postcards from America” by photographer Jim Goldberg. Ten photographers from the Magnum agency worked together in Rochester for two weeks in April 2012.
