Initiative to give animals more protection

More than 6,000 cases of animal neglect and cruelty were reported in Switzerland in 2008, 20 per cent more than in 2007. The Swiss Animal Protection Association wants to reverse the trend with an initiative to introduce animal lawyers in each canton. The government is against it, but the Swiss public will have the final say in a nationwide vote in March. (Julie Hunt, swissinfo.ch)
