The number of complaints submitted to the asylum appeals commission increased by a fifth in 1999 compared to the previous year. In its annual report, the commission said it received 12,193 appeals of which more than seven per cent were successful.

The commission also said it processed 29 per cent more appeals than in 1998, although there is still a backlog of more than 10,000.

The main reason for the rise in appeal cases was the tightening of asylum laws, and the Kosovo conflict, which led to a sharp rise in the number of people seeking refuge in Switzerland.
