Swiss and Canadians to negotiate new tax accord
The Canadian government has announced the opening of negotiations next month to draw up a new tax accord with Switzerland.
The negotiations have been announced in advance to allow submissions from interested parties on the question of double taxation, Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said.
“The government is particularly keen to know what difficulties Canadians may face under the Swiss tax regime,” Flaherty added.
The Canadian revenue minister, Jean-Pierre Blackburn, has been trying for several months to obtain the list of Canadian clients of UBS.
Blackburn travelled to Britain, France and Germany last week to speak to his counterparts about the fight against tax havens.
The French authorities have promised to hand over the names of alleged Canadian tax fraudsters, who appear on a list of 3,000 Swiss bank account holders in the possession of France, Blackburn said.
