Ban on al-Qaida extended
Switzerland has extended a ban on the terrorist organisation al-Qaida and its affiliates for another three years.
The cabinet on Friday renewed an ordinance that was enforced after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.
The ruling also requires anyone with information on the organisation to contact authorities.
“Jihadism in general and al-Qaida in particular still pose a threat to Switzerland,” the Federal Justice Department said.
The ban covers all activities by al-Qaida and any action such as propaganda that supports it.
The measures were due to expire at the end of 2008 and will eventually be incorporated into a 1997 law concerning interior security.
