League leaders Basel came one step closer to becoming championship winners, after their comfortable 3-1 victory over St Gallen on Thursday.
Christian Gross’s team are now seven points clear at the top of the league table at the halfway stage of the championship round, ahead of Grasshoppers who have 33 points. Lugano are in third position, eight points behind Basel.
St Gallen opened the match with a goal by Franco Di Jorio in the first half, but Basel fought back with Murat Yakin grabbing two goals in three minutes in the second half, followed by a late finish by Marco Zwyssig in the 70th minute.
The losing team also lost Patrick Winkler, who had to be carried away in the 50th minute of the game after sustaining a lung injury.
St Gallen, coached by Gérard Castella, are currently ranked sixth, with 24 points, but with all hopes of qualifying for the UEFA cup now gone.
Thursday’s match was rescheduled after the original fixture was cancelled due to a floodlight failure at St Gallen’s Espenmoos stadium.
