Basel lose to Portugal’s Benfica

FC Basel have missed the chance to lead their Champion’s League group after a disappointing 0-2 loss to Lisbon’s Benfica in Basel on Tuesday.

Despite the loss, interim FC Basel coach Heiko Vogel said he was pleased with how his team had played. He replaced Thorsten Fink, who left to train Germany’s Hamburg team earlier this month.

“I’m very satisfied with our game, but not at all with the results,” said Vogel afterwards, noting that Benfica had well-organised defence as well as good offence players.

Lisbon’s Bruno César scored the first goal 20 minutes into the game; his colleague Oscar Cardozo scored a free kick 15 minutes before time.

Lisbon coach Jorge Jesus said that Basel could still make life difficult for Benfica. The two Group C teams face off again on November 2 in Lisbon.

Benfica lead the Group C ranking with seven points; Basel have four. In other group news, England’s Manchester United beat Romania’s Galati 2-0 on Tuesday.
