Basel pick up first Champions League points

Swiss football club FC Basel have beaten Italian club Roma 3-1 in their third of six Champions League matches.

It was the first time a Swiss club has beaten Roma at home – and Roma’s first home defeat of the season.

Basel’s Alex Frei opened the scoring in the 12th minute, Borriello equalised in the 21st, Inkoom restored the Swiss lead in the 44th and Cabral sealed the impressive victory in the 93rd.

The Swiss club thus jump from bottom of their four-team group to second, boosting their chances of reaching the last 16 in the Champions League, European football’s most prestigious club tournament.

The top two teams from each group advance to the first knockout round. The third-place finishers enter the Uefa Europa League round of 32.

In the other Group E match on Tuesday, Bayern Munich beat Cluj, from Romania, 3-2.

Munich have won all three matches and top the group on nine points, with the other three teams all on three points. Basel have the best goal difference.

Basel’s next match is against Roma, in Switzerland, on November 3.
