Birthday blues for Rosset

Swiss number two Marc Rosset had little to cause to celebrate on Tuesday as his 30th birthday saw him crash out of the ATP tournament in St Petersburg.

The Genevan had been hoping to defend the title which he won in the Russian city last year, but instead suffered a shock first round defeat to home favourite Andrei Stolyarov.

Seeded fourth for the tournament and ranked more than 80 places above his opponent, Rosset appeared to be cruising to victory when he took the first set 6-1.

But the birthday champagne appeared to have gone flat in the next two sets, with Rosset eventually losing 6-1, 4-6, 3-6.
