Sept. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Sulzer AG, the Swiss pumpmaker, said it is in talks with U.S. oilfield equipment maker Dresser Rand Group Inc. about a potential merger.

Sulzer “is engaged in non-exclusive discussions with Dresser-Rand regarding a potential transaction,” the Winterthur, Switzerland-based company said in a statement, without elaborating further.

“There can be no assurance that a transaction will result from these discussions,” it said.

Sulzer issued the statement in response to a report by Swiss newspaper Handelszeitung earlier today, which said the two companies could announce a merger as soon as next month. Dresser-Rand is working with Morgan Stanley to prepare for possible takeover bids from companies including Siemens AG, people with knowledge of the matter said last month.
