British-born Gander, who was born in 1976 and a graduate of Amsterdam's prestigious Rijksakademie, is the third winner of the prize.

Gander's work has been shown in New York, Paris, London and in Switzerland.

The artist's work synthesizes the details of life and his own biography, art history and the artistic process into forms such as sculpture, installations and the printed word.

The prize is awarded by Zurich Insurance and Haus Konstruktiv, the Foundation for Constructive and Concrete Art.

Gander's art will be shown at the Haus Konstruktiv centre in Zurich next year.

Previous recipients are Carsten Nicolai and Tino Segal.
