Campaign urges drivers to brake for pedestrians

A national campaign is being launched on Monday to ensure that drivers brake for pedestrians at zebra crossings. The Swiss Council for Accident Prevention (BPA) says only one out of two drivers stop.

The agency, along with 11 other organisations, is re-launching a campaign to convince drivers to put on their brakes.

The campaign, which runs until November 19, is aimed at getting people to respect the 1994 law that gives the right-of-way to pedestrians in yellow "safety" zones. Television advertisements and posters will appear all over Switzerland.

Despite the fact that only half of all Swiss drivers respect the law, zebra crossings are still the safest places to cross the road, with six out of 10 accidents taking place outside of zebra crossings.

Last year, 1,081 people were involved in zebra crossing accidents, a one per cent increase over 1998. The BPA says accidents in general have been on the rise over the past two years.

However, the number of fatal accidents has decreased by about 40 per cent and the number of incidents resulting in serious injuries has dropped by 10 per cent.
