Christmas cards are as popular as ever

Sending Christmas cards and packages remains a popular festive tradition in Switzerland, according to figures released by Swiss Post.

Between December 1 and 25, the Swiss postal service handled 15 million packages, with volume peaking on some days at one million parcels and 20 million letters. The numbers are on a par with recent years.

In the week leading up to Christmas the three sorting centres in cantons Vaud, Solothurn and Thurgau were handling over a million packages and 20 million letters a day, twice the amount sent outside the festive season.

Swiss Post is also taking part this year in the “2 x Noël” scheme, in which people can send care packages free of charge for a Red Cross drive for the needy. The most useful items include non-perishable food, toiletries, new shoes and school items for children. The drive ends on January 7.
