The 23-year-old Swiss took 54 minutes, 59.5 seconds to complete the 20 kilometers, 1.7 seconds ahead of Marcus Hellner of Sweden.

Cologna's strongest rival for the World Cup, Petter Northug of Norway, finished well down and now stands practically no chance of winning.

The final cross-country World Cup race takes place on Sunday.

Cologna, who was little known at the beginning of the season, was the unexpected winner of the Tour de Ski cross-country event in Val di Fielle in Italy in January.

That win was the biggest Swiss success in cross-country skiing since Andy Grünenfelder took the bronze in the 50km event at the 1988 Calgary Olympics.
