Cologna, who had been an unknown at the start of the race, ended ahead of the Norwegian Petter Northug and the German Axel Teichmann.

Cologna's win was the biggest Swiss success in cross country skiing since Andy Grünenfelder took the bronze in the 50km event at the 1988 Calgary Olympics.

The Tour de Ski comprises eight races over ten days and is based on cycling's stage concept.
