Davis Cup players come down to earth

Switzerland's Davis Cup trio, fresh from a crucial victory against Belarus, have been faring badly this week in individual tournaments. The latest player to crash out of a tournament was Lorenzo Manta.

Despite winning the first set, Manta went out in the second round of a tournament in Los Angeles. He was beaten by the American Paul Goldstein 3-6, 6-1,6-4.

Michel Kratochvil fared no better on Wednesday. He was beaten in the second round of the ATP tennis tournament in Kitzbühel, Austria, losing in straight sets to Ecuador’s Nicolas Lapentti.

There was more misfortune for another of Switzerland’s Davis Cup heroes. George Bastl was the top-seeded player at the ATP Challenger event in Istanbul but was unable to take part after picking up an injury in his right hand.

All three took part in last weekend’s 5-0 drubbing of Belarus in St Gallen – a victory which ensured Switzerland remain in the top flight of Davis Cup tennis.
