Federer reaches US Open semi-finals

Roger Federer has secured a placed in the semi-finals of the US Open tennis tournament after defeating the 130th ranked Gilles Muller.

He won the Flushing Meadows match 7-6, 6-4, 7-6 on Thursday in two hours and 26 minutes after a third set tiebreak.

“Today was particularly difficult – the sun, the wind, and he’s been serving great,” Federer said later.

The four-time US Open winner now faces world number three Novak Djokovic of Serbia, in a rematch of last year’s final, which Federer won.

He is bidding for a 13th Grand Slam title, which would place him one short of Pete Sampras’s record.

Saturday’s other men’s semi-final will see top ranked Rafael Nadal of Spain take on Britain’s Andy Murray.
