Policeman shot dead during forced eviction

A 39-year-old police officer has been shot dead and his colleague wounded during an attempted forced eviction at an apartment in the Emmental region of canton Bern.

The two men, accompanied by local officials, were attempting to carry out an eviction order on Tuesday morning. When the police tried to open the apartment door the 35-year-old resident opened fire, Bern cantonal police said.

The injured officer was shot in the arm but managed to call for back up. The man was later arrested by police who responded to the alert.

This is not the first time a forced eviction has ended violently. A policeman was shot and seriously injured in the western town of Biel last September by a 67-year-old man who fled his home after exchanging shots with police.

The incident sparked a massive manhunt until the man was finally captured ten days later.
