Testing Switzerland’s emergency warning sirens

More than 8,000 sirens howled across Switzerland a few days ago, as the civil protection authorities tested their emergency warning system, said to be the envy of the rest of Europe. The alarms are designed to alert the public in the case of nuclear or chemical accidents, dams breaking, satellites crashing to earth, earthquakes, epidemics and armed conflict.
