Zurich’s chances were slim going into the game on Thursday night in the second most prestigious European club tournament after the Champions League.

They needed to beat their hosts in Lisbon – and even that might not have been enough – but Ricky van Wolfswinkel put an end to those hopes in the 15th minute and Valeri Bojinov made it two in the 58th.

Zurich never threatened the Sporting goal. Of their five games, Zurich have drawn two and lost three.

Elsewhere in Group D, FC Vaslui held Italian side Lazio to 0-0 in Romania, leaving them level on points – six behind Sporting, who have now won four of their five games.
