Making a return in the match was Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo – the world' s most expensive player - after almost two months out of the game following an ankle injury.

Gonzalo Higuain scored the only goal for the Spanish side at the game in Madrid on Wednesday evening. But the biggest cheer came when Ronaldo appeared on the pitch mid-way through the second half.

The win sends Real Madrid to the top of the Champions League Group C.

FC Zurich are now out of the European competition, coming last in the group with three points.

"Bearing in mind the last few weeks where we have not been doing so well in the league at home we are relatively pleased," said Zurich coach Bernard Challandes.

"We were up against the richest team in the world and we weren't humiliated. Our confidence wasn't high and it's an acceptable result for us."
