Federer advances at US Open

Roger Federer has made it to the fourth round of the US Open after beating 27th-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia.

The five-time US Open champion needed four sets to win the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, and had to deal with an unpredictable wind at Flushing Meadows on Saturday.

Federer’s only major hiccup came at the end of the second set, when he was broken in the last game.

He later said the wind was “tricky” and took some adjustments. He also commented on the record number of injury retirements – 14 by the third round – at the tournament. “For me, it is shocking to see so many retirements. For me it doesn’t matter how bad I’m feeling, I will be out there and giving it a try, because you never know what’s going to happen.”

Federer’s next opponent will be unseeded Argentine Juan Monaco.
