The Swiss cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Croatia's Ivan Ljubicic and faces Germany's Tommy Haas on Friday.

The latest win assures Federer, who suffered a bout of glandular fever at the beginning of the year, the top position in the world ranking ahead of Spain's Rafael Nadal.

Stanislas Wawrinka, Switzerland's number two, defeated South Korea's Lee Hyung-Taik in three sets on Wednesday. His next opponent is third-seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

It is the first time that Wawrinka has qualified for a quarterfinal of a Masters tournament.
