Switzerland's Roger Federer is through to the semi-finals of the $3.5 million ATP tournament in Miami after an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Romania's Andrei Pavel.

The 20-year-old Basel player, who is seeded 12th, needed only 54 minutes to dispatch the Romanian.

Federer grabbed the first ten points of the match to race away to a 3-0 lead after only five minutes. The Swiss struck 27 winners and made just ten unforced errors in what was close to a perfect performance.

Federer will now face world number one Lleyton Hewitt. The Australian overcame Russia’s Marat Safin in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6.
