Federer ducks out of Chinese tournament
Swiss world number three Roger Federer will not play in the Shanghai Masters tennis tournament next month in order to recover from a punishing summer schedule.
“After consultation with my team, I’ve unfortunately decided to pull out of the Shanghai Rolex Masters in order to take some necessary time to rest and recuperate after a long summer,” the 30-year-old former world number one said on Friday.
“I have some nagging injuries that I need to address and I look forward to returning to the ATP World Tour as soon as possible.”
The Shanghai Masters takes places from October 8-16. Federer, who holds a record 16 grand slam titles, was beaten in the final last year by Britain’s Andy Murray.
On September 11, Federer had to digest a bitter defeat when he lost in five sets to Novak Djokovic in the semifinal of the US Open despite serving for the match at 40-15. Djokovic went on to win the title.
Last weekend Federer helped Switzerland defeat Australia to return to the World Group of the Davis Cup.
Federer’s next scheduled match is on October 31 at the Swiss Indoors event in his home town of Basel.
