Basel's Roger Federer has had no trouble making his way into the third round of the US Open, beating Canada's Daniel Nestor in three sets during a one and a half hour match.

Federer powered his way to victory over his 307th-ranked opponent with 15 aces, rounding off the match with a final score of 6-1 7-6 6-1.

Contrastingly, compatriot Marc Rosset ran out of luck at Flushing Meadows. He was knocked out of the tournament by this year's Gstaad Open winner, Alex Corretja from Spain.

The number eight seed outslugged Rosset 6-3 7-6 (7/4) 6-3.

On the ladies' side, the world number one, Martina Hingis, raced through to the fourth round after her convincing victory over Italy's Tathiana Garbin. It took her a mere 37 minutes to defeat Garbin, who managed to win just one game during the match.

The final score, 6-1 6-0, resulted from a mere five unforced errors on Hingis' behalf.

"I am feeling better and better each time," said Hingis, who had routed American Kristina Brandi in the previous round. "I'm just happy to play great tennis right now, round by round. It will be definitely great to win a Grand Slam title right here. This is my chance."

The Swiss tennis ace faces France's Sandrine Testud in the fourth round.
