Federer wins Cincinnati Masters

World number one Roger Federer defeated Novak Djokovic of Serbia on Sunday to win the Cincinnati Masters tennis tournament.

The Swiss won 6-1, 7-5. It was his third win in Cincinnati and his 61st career singles title.

He dominated the match from the beginning, winning the first set in 32 minutes.

“A good start always helps,” Federer said after the match. “This whole week has been great to me. It’s a fantastic year already.

After a lean year in 2008, it was his fourth title of the season. It makes him a strong favourite for the US Open, which begins in New York next week. He is aiming for his sixth consecutive win at Flushing Meadows.

Federer said in Cincinnati that the win had been an emotional experience, since it was his first victory since becoming a father in July.

Federer is now 2,430 points ahead of world number two Andy Murray in the ATP ranking. He beat the Scotsman in the semi-finals on Saturday.
