Federer wins second Masters match

Roger Federer has beaten Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic to win his second match at the Shanghai Masters Cup tennis tournament.

The world number two beat 26th-ranked Stepanek 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 on Wednesday.

Federer had been due to face Andy Roddick but the American pulled out just hours before the match after spraining his right ankle during practice.

On Monday Federer lost 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to ninth-ranked Gilles Simon of France, who replaced Spaniard Radael Nadal, also out due to injury.

Federer also lost his first match at last year’s Masters Cup but went on to win the title. He also won the Cup in 2003, 2004 and 2006.

He now faces Britain’s Andy Murray in his final group match on Friday. A win will take Federer through to the semifinals. Murray has already qualified having won his first two matches.
