Fever ends Cancellara's California dream

Swiss Olympic champion Fabian Cancellara has dropped out of the Tour of California cycling race for health reasons.

The time trial specialist came down with a fever and gave up during Sunday's first stage, according to officials.

Francisco Mancebo of Spain crossed the finishing line more than a minute ahead of a group of riders, including Lance Armstrong of the United States and Switzerland's Steve Morabito.

The 173km stage took place in drenching rain and cold temperatures between Davis and Santa Rosa.

Mancebo also took the overall lead with defending race champion Levi Leipheimer in second place.

Cancellara had won the prologue of the race on Saturday.
