Star Swiss forwards Alexander Frei and Marco Streller have announced their retirement from international football.

Neither player will take part in Switzerland’s qualifying match for the 2012 European Championship against England at Wembley on June 4.

Switzerland is six points behind group leaders England and Montenegro, with just four points on the board and four matches still to play.

Frei, who is the country’s top goal scorer with 42 goals in 84 international matches, had previously said he would retire after the England match.

Streller has scored 12 times in 37 international appearances.

The FC Basel teammates said recent negative criticism from fans had influenced their decisions.
