Winter sports fans came out in force this weekend for the opening of the season in resorts all over Switzerland.
Conditions were excellent on Saturday, after abundant snowfalls in the previous few days. In the Bernese Oberland, for example, there was about a metre of fresh snow at 2,000 metres
A poorer weather forecast meant there were fewer visitors on Sunday, but a spokesman for the Jungfrau railways estimated that more than 10,000 people had taken to the slopes of the Kleine Scheidegg and First areas over the weekend as a whole.
By midday on Sunday the helicopter rescue services had had to answer about a dozen calls to deal with accidents in different parts of the country.
